FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM)- More than 100 classmates, teachers, parents and loved ones showed up to a vigil to honor a 15-year-old sophomore band member who drowned during a band party Friday night.

Rick Sek, 15, died in an accidental drowning during an annual band party at the Lockheed Martin Recreation Center.  Lifeguards pulled him out of the water and performed CPR and even used an Automated External Defibrilator to try to revive him. Paramedics arrived a short time later and transported Sek to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Dozens filed into the Paschal High School Memorial Gardens, where other fallen students and teachers have been memorialized.

Several of Sek’s family members showed up to the vigil, humbled by the number of students who wanted to honor Sek.

“To most people he would seem to be a very timid and reserved person,” said 15-year-Teara Eng, Sek’s cousin. “But once you got to know him he was a very outgoing, a very funny person. He was a person that everyone got along with.”

Sek was overwhelmingly described a kid who uttered few words, but had a big heart.

He was a french horn player in the Paschal High School band.

Dozens of friends and acquaintances spoke about Sek and it was his love of band and his bandmates that helped him come out of his shell.

Fellow french horn players played a song in honor of their fallen friend.

“He is missed and respected by this entire band and from this day forward, we play for Rick Sek,” said Ashley Ainsworth.

Meanwhile, Eng said his family is devastated over Sek’s death.

“We know he has a better life already. He’s in a better place and just pulling through together,” he said.

Counselors will be available for students on Tuesday, when students get back from the Labor Day holiday.

NEW YORK (CBS NEWS) – In the latest piece of the nature versus nurture puzzle, a new study finds that political beliefs may be influenced by both your genetics and the environment you were raised in.

After looking at studies of identical and fraternal twins as well as their extended families, researchers were able to determine that some voting behavior was due to the way a person was raised. However, other beliefs were due to genetic predisposition, which really kicked in between the ages of 21 to 25 after the person left the home, according to the researchers. “The family environment is so strong that it overrides any genetic similarity, but you leave home and go on your own path,” Peter Hatemi, an associate professor of political science, microbiology and biochemistry at Pennsylvania State University, said to HealthDay.

The researchers discovered when it came to choosing a political party, attitudes on political groups and sense of civic duty, much of it was influenced by those who raised the individual. The majority of the remaining beliefs — which ranged from the economy to religion — were found to be influenced by genetics. Political knowledge, overall ideology (whether liberal or conservative) and how much influence right wing authoritarianism should have seemed to be three of the highest genetically-influenced beliefs, the researchers said.

While they couldn’t pinpoint the specific genes that may make a person pro-life or pro choice, certain “candidate genes” may make a person inclined to more political-affiliated behaviors. For example, a gene called 5-HTT that helps regulate serotonin could show how likely the person is to go vote on Election Day. But so far there isn’t a gene that scientists have found linked to if a person is a Democrat or a Republican.

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Students on the Southern Methodist University campus are being asked to take extra precautions as police search for the person that sexually assaulted a female student Monday night.

The attack happened just before 10:00 p.m. near the Dedman Law School, in the northwest area of the campus.

SMU police chief Rick Shafer detailed what happened.

“We had an SMU student that was out walking on campus,” he said. “Someone approached her from the rear, subdued her and sexually assaulted her.”

After the assault the woman bravely sought help.

“She was able at one point to get away, ran off, and then found another person who was out on campus that assisted her,” the chief said.

SMU police searched the campus and surrounding areas for the suspect, but located no one.

There is only a brief description of the suspect. At the time of the attack the white man was wearing a dark-colored hoodie, blue jeans and dark shoes.

Police are hoping someone will come forward with information, because “Thus far we’ve found no other witnesses.”

Police are asking that anyone who thinks they know the suspect or has more information about the attack contact the SMU Police Department at (214) 768-3388. Anonymous can be reported by calling (214) SMU-2TIP or by completing a Silent Witness Form online.

Chief Shafer is asking that everyone use caution while walking on campus at night and if possible walk with another person.

Police say Monday’s attack is the first sex assault this school year.
