North Texans playing outdoors today are actually laboring in one of the hottest Labor Days on record.  Not quite as hot as it was on Labor Day 2000, when the high temperature blasted to 111°, the hottest September day on record in DFW.  We’ll have to get used to these triple digit temps for the rest of the week unfortunately.

We are watching a cold front in the middle of the country right now.  Now we’re still waiting on a good push from a shift in the upper level winds before this front affects North Texas.  As Meteorologist Garry Seith reported this morning, this won’t happen until the end of the week.

When the front finally does arrive, it will bring a decent shot at rain and thunderstorms in North Texas Friday night into Saturday morning.  Then MUCH COOLER air will arrive just in time for the weekend.

LOVING THE TEMPERATURE TREND FOR SEPTEMBER

As we approach the official last day of summer and first day of fall, we can start seeing pretty wild swings in our temperatures.  Cold fronts start making their way through North Texas in greater frequency this month, but the true, lasting cold fronts usually wait until October, making us grab for the long sleeves more often.  But the temperature trend line is down in September on average.

NICE TO HAVE THE ADDED RAINFALL IN AUGUST!

The numbers are in for August rainfall, and it was generally good news for us.  Of course, the month started extremely hot and dry, but after August 15, we turned a corner.  There were a few episodes of flash flooding, but in the end, most North Texans had a surplus of rainfall during what’s typically the driest month of the whole year.

ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - Nearly everybody enjoys a ride down memory lane, even if that ride drops you from several hundred feet in the air. Six Flags Over Texas hosted a special group of riders this weekend on its Texas Chute Out attraction, which will close on Monday. North Texans were asked about their memorable moments on the ride, and a select few were invited to the park for a final farewell.

The Flashback will also be closing. The rollercoaster flips riders upside down through 100-foot tall loops and speeds up to 55 mph. It debuted at the park in 1989. The Texas Chute Out parachute attraction lifts riders up 200 feet into the air, pauses for an incredible view of the Metroplex, and then free falls back to the ground.

The two rides have served up decades of special memories for visitors at Six Flags, and this weekend has been their last go-round. Crowds of Texans came out for one last thrill.

Amanda Hamilton said that the Texas Chute Out ride may have even inspired her brother to join the Armed Forces. “Me, my sister and my grandpa, we would ride it,” she said, “and would eventually get my younger brother to ride it. My brother is now in the Army on a Blackhawk.”

“I actually worked this ride when I was 16,” said a sentimental Lori White. The Texas Chute Out has been at the amusement park since 1976. “It was a great summer experience. It taught me a lot about having my first job.”

“I remember it getting stuck at the top,” White added, “and we have to climb up and console guests.”

White took one last trip up to the top with her daughter. “It’s memorable because I’m here with my daughter, who’s 14 now, and I never thought we would not always have this ride to ride together,” White said.

And that final ride was bittersweet. “It was pretty surreal,” said White, “but it was also awesome. I forgot how awesome it was, actually. I’m going to miss it.”

FORT WORTH (CBS 11 NEWS) – While coastal residents pack up and flee in the face of Isaac, North Texans are packing up and heading toward the storm.

Fork lifts swirl around the floor of FEMA’s massive Fort Worth warehouse with large palettes of supplies. Since Thursday, they have loaded more than 130 18-wheelers and sent them toward the Gulf Coast.

“They’ve been going to states like Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana,” said FEMA spokesman Daniel Llargues. “We’re taking water.  We’re taking cots, ready-meals. They’re going to be prestaged away from the storm.”

American Medical Response is moving toward the coast, too. 40 ambulances are carrying medical supplies, oxygen and wheelchairs to staging areas in Louisiana.

“It’s all about preparation, just in case,” said Ted Van Horne, the CEO of American Medical Response. “There’s a tremendous amount of flooding they’re expecting. And it’s better to be safe than sorry and make sure you have all the health care and ambulances there if you need it.”

In Grand Prairie, volunteers for the non-profit, Christian group World Vision spent the day packing emergency food kits. 1000 packages with several meals each will leave their main warehouse tomorrow.

They’ll also send water, clothes and shoes.  Volunteers can only imagine who might receive the supplies and hope their efforts here help someone elsewhere.

“You want to know their story,” said Desirae Hernandez, an 18 year old volunteer. “You want to know what happens. You want to know if they make it and what happens after.  You want to see that person smile. You want to know there’s another life you just saved.”

RICHARDSON (CBS 11 NEWS) – Stripped of his titles and banned from cycling.  Lance Armstrong’s reputation in the cycling world may now be tarnished for good.

But some North Texans say he’s still their friend and, in one case, a possible life-saver.

“He’s still the man we know,” said Jack Gillespie.

Gillespie remembers putting Lance Armstrong’s first sponsored bike together.

“The first one given to him free by a manufacturer,” Gillespie said.

Armstrong was just a teenager then.

“15 or16,” Gillespie guessed.

Gillespie has watched Armstrong through many of the cycles of his life and believes the seven time Tour de France winner stopped fighting doping allegations to focus on his foundation.

“I think it has been affecting his cancer foundation. I think that’s one of the reasons he did what he  did yesterday,” said Gillespie.

Bob Rasch of Dallas never met Lance Armstrong, but the two have something in common – testicular cancer.

“I was diagnosed in February of this year,” Rasch said.

Armstrong’s Livestrong website has been a big help.

“His website was very helpful in helping me determine A – I needed to get to a doctor and B – I probably had cancer,” he said.

For Bob Rasch, Lance Armstrong is still an inspiration no matter Armstrong’s fall in the world of professional cycling.

“It’s disappointing all the way around.  It doesn’t take away from what he’s done for cancer research. And, it doesn’t take away from the fact that he’s a cancer survivor,” Rasch said.

And no one can take that away from Lance Armstrong.

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Massages. Facials. Pedicures. Americans have all kinds of ways to cope with the hustle and bustle of life. But a special lamp is helping to reduce stress for some North Texans. “It’s very relaxing, soothing,” said office manager Rebecca Buckner. “It clears your mind, your chest, it opens up everything.”

Buckner’s day is filled with stress and payroll deadlines. To find her inner peace, Buckner surrounds herself with calming music, cool air and several glowing salt crystal lamps. “After I do payroll on Monday, I come sit in here, and it’s really, really relaxing,” Buckner explained. “It takes away all of my stress.”

A microbiologist at the University of California conducted a study, determining that salt crystal lamps actually increase the number of negative ions in the air. Those negative ions could kill off bacteria in the air, which in turn could enhance the the body’s immune system and increase the level of serotonin in the bloodstream.

“I don’t see it’s harmful to anyone,” said Dr. Msonthi Levine. “If that’s the way you want to find your peace and happiness, to meditate and get your body ready for the next day, that’s what I recommend.”

Buckner has committed herself to salt crystal healing, saying that just 15 to 30 minutes of meditation helps her cope with the pressures of life.

A few lucky North Texans will get some much-needed rain today and for most days the rest of the week.  Nothing at all widespread is expected.  The only thing widespread will be the heat.

An upper level high is still controlling our weather, although this week the high will be anchored a bit farther to the west of Texas.  This is close enough to keep us hot, but will also allow a few weak disturbances to rotate in from the north.  We have such a disturbance moving in today.

The intensity of the heat will come down just a touch this week compared to last, but that’s little consolation when you consider the high temperatures will still be above 100°.

There is a HEAT ADVISORY in effect for the counties well east and southeast of the DFW area.  This advisory is in effect mainly because the humidity values will be higher in these areas, and thus heat index numbers will approach 105° during the afternoon.  The HEAT ADVISORY will expire Tuesday evening, but we could see it extended.

Today should be the 10th day in a row at DFW of temperatures at or above 100°.  And it looks like we’ll have many more to add to that streak if the 7day forecast pans out.

Tropical Storm Ernesto is on the verge of becoming a hurricane as of this writing.  Regardless of its strength, it is not going to impact Texas.  Ernesto should make landfall near Belize by midweek, reemerge over the Bay of Campeche and then move west into Mexico by the weekend.

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - The CBS Buzz Tour is rolling through the Metroplex on Monday. This is the most exciting way to learn about the network’s upcoming fall schedule. Preview returning favorites like “The Big Bang Theory” and “How I Met Your Mother,” and get a first glimpse at new shows like “Elementary” and “Vegas.”

There’s going to be tons of contests and giveaways, and the chance to take your photo with the casts of hit CBS shows — virtually. Tour attendees can stand in front of a green screen and be dropped into a picture along with CBS stars. But one star is joining the tour live and in person!
