Rangers Fly Japanese Little League Team To Arlington

ARLINGTON (CBSDFWCOM) Mayor Robert Cluck had a hard time verbally communicating with his young Japanese guests Thursday at Arlington City Hall.

“I’m not going to speak correctly some of the words I have to read,” he told the fourteen teenage boys who stood attentively in two, neat rows waiting for the mayor to read a proclamation honoring their visit.

But the verbal communication did not matter. There is an international language that brought the boys here; the language of baseball.

The Japanese little league team is from Ishinomaki. Their hometown was destroyed by last year’s earthquake and tsunami. They lost their homes, their playing fields, and their friend and teammate, 12-year old Hidekazu Suzuki.

But there was someone in the U.S. who wanted to help — Yu Darvish. The Texas Rangers flew the team to Arlington and local families are housing the boys. They were treated like VIP’s during Darvish’s last game, getting television time, meeting the players including another favorite from Japan Koji Uehara and one of the boys threw out the first pitch.

“It was so exciting to throw from the same mound as Yu Darvish,” Kaito Suganomata, the 15-year old pitcher who tossed out the first ball.

The game and the big-league surroundings are internationally known symbols, common to any young boy who grew up playing or as a fan of baseball.

And for the City of Arlington and the Rangers it Is a gesture as simple as a handshake — a way to say we’re half a world away, but we care.

“We all speak the same language, we don’t quite understand but we know what we’re saying to each other,” Mayor Cluck said. “When I asked a Yu Darvish question they were quick on it. They understood it.

The team suffered together in the tsunami and is healing together. And now the little league team knows they have the support of a big league team — and a city — half a world away.

NEW YORK (AP) - D.C. United coach Ben Olsen was fined an undisclosed amount by Major League Soccer’s disciplinary committee on Wednesday for criticizing officials after the team’s 1-1 draw against Philadelphia on Aug. 19.

Also, FC Dallas was fined for improper bench behavior after a 2-1 win over Real Salt Lake on Aug. 18.

NFL To Use Replacement Officials For Week 1

NEW YORK (AP) – The NFL will open the regular season with replacement officials.

League executive Ray Anderson has told the 32 teams that with negotiations remain at a standstill between the NFL and the officials’ union. The replacements will be on the field beginning next Wednesday night when the Cowboys visit the Giants to open the season.

The NFL Referees Association was locked out in early June and talks on a new collective bargaining agreement went nowhere. Replacements have been used throughout the preseason, with mixed results.

In 2001, the NFL used replacements for the first week of the regular season before a contract was finalized.

Bettman, NHL Issue Another Proposal To Players

NEW YORK (AP) – The NHL has issued another proposal to the players’ association as a lockout looms next month.

NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr confirmed that the league offered a new proposal _ its second this summer _ during negotiations Tuesday at the NHL offices. The two sides will meet again on Wednesday to discuss it, after Fehr and the players break it down on their own.

Speaking outside of the headquarters, Fehr said it was “a proposal that we intend to respond to.”

The current collective bargaining agreement runs out on Sept. 15 and the NHL has said it will lock the players out if a new deal isn’t reached.

Limiting the personnel at the bargaining table in the hope of making progress, only Fehr and his top assistant, Steve Fehr, met with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and deputy Bill Daly on Tuesday. Traditionally, several players have joined in, but not this week as the end of the current CBA draws near.

DALLAS (CBS SPORTS) Dirk Nowitzki is 34 years old. He’s played more than a thousand games. He’s been in the league 14 seasons, won an MVP and won an NBA title.

He’s a sure-thing Hall of Famer, probably the greatest international player of all-time, the greatest Dallas Maverick of all-time and has an argument for greatest power forward ever.

How much longer does he have it in him? At least two more seasons, and maybe more.

In a Twitter Q&A with his fans, Dirk was asked how many more seasons he plans on going. “2 for sure and then see how I feel,” was Dirk’s answer.

Why two? Probably because that’s how many more years he has on his contract (along with $43.6 million on it too).

Dirk was also asked “why not just jump ship to some ‘Super’ team?” and his response was, “I bleed blue.”

Clemens Back On The Mound At 50

SUGAR LAND, Texas (AP) — Roger Clemens is back on the mound at age 50, striking out hitters again.

Clemens pitched Saturday night for the Sugar Land Skeeters of the independent Atlantic League. He faced Bridgeport and fanned the first batter he faced, former major leaguer Joey Gathright.

The seven-time Cy Young Award winner, who last pitched for the New York Yankees in 2007, worked a 1-2-3 first inning with two strikeouts. His fastball was clocked at 88 mph.

The Rocket hasn’t committed to playing more than one game for the Skeeters, but some believe this is the first step in an attempted return to the majors.

Clemens Comments On His HOF Chances

NEW YORK (CBS NEWS) - Five years after throwing his last pitch in a major league game, and two months after he was found not guilty of perjury in a steroid scandal, Roger Clemens spoke about his chances of getting into baseball’s Hall of Fame.

“I can’t control it,” Clemens told “CBS This Morning” co-host Charlie Rose on Thursday. “It’s not going to change my life either way.”

In his first national TV interview since his acquittal in June, Clemens said, “The Hall of Fame is great. I’ve got a lot of great buddies there. The guys that are there paved the way for me to do what I love to do and make a lot of money doing it, take care of my family.”

The seven-time Cy Young Award winner retired in 2007 after playing 23 seasons for four teams in his career.

MEXICO CITY (Sports Network) - Eduardo Najera announced his retirement as an NBA player on Wednesday and will move into a couple of roles with the Dallas Mavericks, including coach of the team’s NBA Development League affiliate.

Najera spent five of his 12 NBA seasons with Dallas. He will become the head coach of D-League’s Texas Legends and will also be a minority owner of the minor league club.

“This is a dream come true,” said Najera. “I have long wondered what would be in store for me when I hung up the basketball playing shoes, and this is the perfect opportunity for my post-playing career.”

Najera, who will succeed Del Harris as coach of the Legends, will also hold a front office position with the Mavericks. Harris will return to his role as the general manager of the Legends.

“I look forward to assisting Eddie in any way possible as general manager,” said Harris. “I am proud to say that one of my former players is taking over the coaching reigns, and look forward to watching Eddie’s development as a coach.”

Najera will become the first Mexican-born head coach under the NBA umbrella.
