Frisco Pilot Killed In Air Show Crash

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — A Texas pilot was killed when his plane crashed during an air show in eastern Iowa, authorities said Sunday.

Glenn A. Smith, of Frisco, Texas, was flying a Soviet-era retired military jet in the Quad-City Air Show in Davenport when the crash occurred, the Quad-City Times reported. Authorities said the jet was flying in formation with other members of the HopperFlight jet team when it failed to pull out of a 45-degree bank and crashed into a field north of Interstate 80 about 1:25 p.m. Saturday.

Assistant Davenport Police Chief Don Schaeffer said at a news conference Saturday that the plane flew directly into the ground.

“He never had an opportunity to come out of it,” he said.

Nobody on the ground was hurt, but crowds watching the show saw the plane go down and erupt in flames.

Davenport police and federal investigators planned to comb the field Saturday for widely scattered wreckage from the plane.

Schaeffer estimated parts of the plane were strewn over an area up to 220 yards, or a tenth of a mile. Schaeffer said he had no information about what may have caused the crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.

Smith was CEO of the Warbird Educational Foundation that owned the Soviet-era jet he was flying.

A squadron of planes flew over the crash site Sunday in the “missing man” formation before the air show continued.

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — Authorities have identified the pilot who was killed when his plane crashed during an air show in eastern Iowa.

The Quad-City Times reported that Glenn A. Smith, of Frisco, Texas, was the pilot killed in the crash.

Smith was CEO of the Warbird Educational Foundation that owned the Soviet-era jet he was flying.

The crash Saturday created a fireball when Smith’s plane failed to pull out of a 45-degree bank and crashed into a field. No one else was hurt. Federal officials are investigating.

Smith was part of the HopperFlight jet team that was performing at the Quad-City Air Show in Davenport.

A squadron of planes flew over the crash site Sunday in the “missing man” formation before the air show continued.

Jerry Jones Offers Condolences To Family Who Lost Seven Year Old Daughter In Tragic Crash

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM)- Mark and Annetta Deegear and much of their family joined the Dallas Cowboys on the sidelines during the pregame warm up for the Cowboys first home preseason game. There was just one person missing.

“It’s a bittersweet feeling because I wish she was here with us,” said Annetta Deegear.

On August 5, a driver hit six people in front of a busy shopping center in Lake Worth.

Mark and Annetta Deegear and their seven-year-old daughter, Savannah, were walking out of Target, when a driver raced through the parking lot.

Savannah was killed in the horrific crash.

Earlier that fateful day, Mark Deegear had bought his daughter a Dallas Cowboys cheer-leading outfit so she could wear it to the first Cowboys preseason game for a daddy-daughter date.

“It’s hard to fathom that this was the game that me and my daughter were supposed to come to,” Mark Deegear said. “I hope I don’t get too emotional.”

Mark Deegear has been a die-hard Cowboys fan for decades and has had season tickets for years. He would often bring his daughter to games.

Soon after hearing the Deegear’s story, Jerry Jones wrote a letter to the family, inviting them to Saturday’s game.

“I have no words. I broke down in tears when I got the letter from him to come down on this field to meet him and to do what I always loved, being around the Dallas Cowboys,” Mark Deegear said.

After a television interview, Jones greeted the Deegear family. He embraced them and offered his condolences, took pictures and allowed family members to try on his Super Bowl ring.

Moved by the family’s courage, Jones ordered the family be moved into a suite for the game. The Deegear’s were overcome with emotion after the kind gesture.

“We showed him a beautiful picture of our daughter and he was just heartbroken over what we went through,” said Annetta Deegear.

Inside the suite, with family and friends by their side, the Deegears celebrated not only the Cowboys, but their beloved Savannah’s life.

“It’s better than I could have ever imagined. It’s a dream come true,” said Annetta Deegear.

It was the first time Annetta Deegear spoke publicly about her daughter’s death. She is still recovering from injuries she sustained in the crash.

2 People Dead After Fiery Dallas Car Crash

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM/AP) – A fiery seven-vehicle crash along southbound Interstate-35E in Dallas left two people dead and shut down part of the highway for several hours. The wreck happened just after 5:00 a.m. Tuesday morning near the Illinois Avenue exit. Another three people were injured in the crash, according to the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators said that the driver of a Cadillac lost control of the vehicle, slamming into a barrier and then colliding with another car. The second car then ran into an 18-wheeler and caught on fire. The other vehicles then piled into the scene. The two people who died were both in the Cadillac. The names have not been released.

A witness at the scene said that the Cadillac appeared to be racing down the freeway with a Corvette, which fled after the crash. Authorities are now trying to determine if that is true, or what other factors may have caused the original driver the lose control.

Traffic was diverted around the crash site for about four hours while investigators looked at evidence and crews cleaned up the scene. The interstate is now open once again.

LA State Police: No Evidence Of Saints Wiretapping

NEW ORLEANS (AP) – Louisiana State Police Col. Mike Edmonson says his investigators have found no evidence at this time that the Saints or general manager Mickey Loomis rigged Superdome wiring so opposing coaches’ radio communications could be intercepted.

Edmonson says state police investigators have run an extensive probe in conjunction with the FBI since the eavesdropping allegations surfaced in news reports in April. He says that after conducting numerous interviews, “there is no evidence that state laws have been violated.”

Edmonson says he cannot comment on the status of related federal probes. He also says State Police will reopen their investigations if new allegations surface.

Loomis and the Saints have emphatically denied the allegations, and the Saints have hired the firm of former FBI director Louis Freeh to do its own investigation.

DALLAS (AP) - A Dallas hospital has announced the birth of quintuplets.

The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center said Monday that the three boys and two girls are in stable condition.

Hospital officials say the youngsters were born premature Thursday to missionaries Carrie and Gavin Jones.

The quintuplets have been named Will Edward, David Stephen, Marcie Jane, Seth Jared and Grace Elise Jones. Their birth weights ranged from 1 pound, 12 ounces to 2 pounds, 11 ounces.

Dr. Gary Burgess says the babies are doing as expected for quintuplets born at 27 weeks. They remain in the neonatal intensive care unit at UT Southwestern’s St. Paul University Hospital.

The parents also have an 8-year-old son.

North Texas Storms Knock Out Electricity

DALLAS (AP) - Storms in North Texas have knocked out power to thousands of homes and businesses.

Dallas-based Oncor on Monday reported more than 23,000 customers without electricity. Utility officials say that’s down from about 55,000 customers losing power Sunday night during strong winds and lightning. Crews worked overnight to restore service.

The National Weather Service says wind gusts of more than 70 mph were recorded in the Fort Worth area, leading to some downed trees and power lines. Authorities have no reports of major damage or injuries.

Forecasters say the DFW area should have highs topping 100 degrees Monday.

NHLPA’s Lockout Plan May Involve KHL Stars

NEW YORK (CBS SPORTS) - Thursday’s round of CBA negotiations produced quite a bit of doom and gloom as Gary Bettman announced that the NHL would not play another season under the current agreement. In other words, if no new deal is reached by September 15, the lockout is on.

That doesn’t mean the NHLPA doesn’t have a Plan B, and on Friday John Shannon of Sportsnet passed along the basic nuts and bolts of their idea. It involves a group KHL All-Stars, a group of players from the NHL, and what would basically be a series of barnstorming games through parts of Canada and Russia.

It’s better than nothing, I guess, but hopefully we never have to find out what this could be like or how it would work.

State Employees Paid $122 Million In Overtime

AUSTIN (AP) - Texas paid $122 million in overtime to public employees statewide last year, with everyone from members of Gov. Rick Perry’s security detail to furniture movers taking home extra pay.

The San Antonio Express-News reported on Sunday that of the 56,948 state employees who received overtime, about 40 earned more than their salaries. Another 1,988 received more than $10,000 in overtime.

In all, overtime accounted for 6 percent of the 2011 state payroll.

Texas’ top overtime earner was a Department of Public Safety sergeant and a member of Perry’s security team who racked up $65,136 in overtime.

The top agency for dolling out overtime was the Texas Health and Human Services Commission. It paid out $27.8 million — primarily because of a backlog of Medicaid and food stamp applications.
