“Face The Nation” With Bob Schieffer
“Face the Nation” has been airing on the CBS Television Network since November 7, 1954. I was only 2 months old when it premiered. It started as an alternative and competitor to NBC’s “Meet the Press.” Frank Stanton, the longtime CBS President, convinced CBS Chairman William S. Paley that the network needed this show and off it went! During its history, it has always been focused on someone or some event that was biggest newsmaker of the week. During its long distinguished history, the show has been hosted by Howard K. Smith (who later went to ABC News), George Herman and Leslie Stahl. Bob Schieffer, who has been working for CBS since the late 1960s, has hosted the show since 1991.
Nobody knows Washington better than Bob Schieffer, nor is there anyone more well liked and respected in the entire journalism world. As you may know, Bob is a native Texan and graduate of TCU. He worked for awhile at the old KXOL 1360 in Fort Worth, when their studios were on East Lancaster Drive. He was a reporter at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963. He then became a news anchor at WBAP-TV Channel 5 (now KXAS NBC 5) when that station called its news, “The Texas News.” It was after that position that he went to CBS News in Washington, where he has been since. You may also remember that it was Bob who anchored the “CBS Evening News” after the departure of Katie Couric. Bob also anchored weekend versions of that newscast as well years ago, and has reported on the CBS Radio Network.
I have met Bob a couple of times and have heard him speak. At a dinner and fundraiser at Ridglea Country Club a few years ago, he told the story about his interview and hiring at CBS. While waiting to be called in for the interview, there was another guy sitting close by. Bob thought he was also interviewing as well. When the office secretary called Bob in, she was actually supposed to call the other guy first. Turns out that Bob gets the CBS News job rather than the other guy who was none other than… Bob Hager!… who ends up at NBC News as a distinguished aviation reporter! Talk about getting your “Bobs” mixed up! But who knows what would have happened if she hadn’t! Bob Hager retired a few years ago from NBC News and had a very illustrious career there.
This weekend, “Face the Nation” hits another milestone when it will expand to one hour from April 8 through the end of August 2012. KTVT CBS 11 is proud to be a part of carrying the one hour expanded “Face the Nation” for its viewers. Don’t miss the premiere of the one-hour “Face the Nation” this Sunday on CBS 11 starting at 9:30 a.m., right after “CBS Sunday Morning.”
Nobody knows Washington better than Bob Schieffer. Nobody.
See you next time.
