Dallas Lighthouse For The Blind Has Expansion On Horizon
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – For decades, the Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind has been working to provide the tools for the visually impaired to become self sufficient and especially how to earn a living.
Now they are expanding their programs and are creating more opportunities for visually impaired North Texans.
El Doris ‘Dee Dot’ Ware works on an assembly line, and co-workers can count on her to keep it lively. “When i come into the door, I’m ‘good morning, everyone, I’m here!’ you know? Let’s go to work!
Ware is legally blind. She is one of dozens of workers at the Lighthouse for the Blind, proving that the visually impaired can still be productive, something that the sighted community can sometimes forget.
“They do until they see us go to work!” says the non-profit’s communications director Blake Lindsay.
Blind since he was a baby, Lindsay iss big on being self sufficient. “Without this opportunity, a lot of people would be sitting at home, drawing a check and looking for work, so we have solved that challenge in many ways and will continue to do so as we grow.”
Right now, the agency is creating even more jobs as they prepare to open a new business services center.
“The closing of orders, the taking of orders, phone services. In our new facility we’ll have plenty of room to set up a phone center, so we’re really excited, it’s going to be a great opportunity for a lot of folks,” says Gordon Spark, who is heading up the center for the Lighthouse.
The blind and visually impaired employees here make everything from sunglass cases, to binder covers– maybe even the highlighter on your desk. But a paycheck, they say, is only part of what they’re getting here.
“It gives you a little vigor, it gives you vitality, it gives you motivation, you know? To have something to do and know that you’re a part of something,” says Ware.
Agency officials say there are so many disabled people that want to earn a living that they have a waiting list for positions. But, they say they plan to start hiring again soon.
